I purchased two Seacut Tradesmen the last time I visited Seattle. Of course the two things that attracted me to it was the price and the similarities to the Leatherman Surge. I own a surge but I have mainly used a Victorinox Swiss Tool almost daily for about the last 28 years. It is so well built and functions perfectly despite the passage of time and hard use. I really wanted a tool to act as a backup that I leave in my truck.
The family and I headed off on a road trip the day after I received the tool. My wife took my Swiss Tool to carve marshmallow sticks so I grabbed the new tradesmen from the truck and began sawing and carving away at willow stocks myself. Then I took the file out and sharpened a very dull axe with it. Since then I’ve been crushing fishing hook barbs, trimming fishing leaders and sharpening hooks with it. The spring loaded pliers are a joy to use. I wonder how I managed without it. It has been every bit as usefully as my Leatherman for a 4th of the price.
I do have some gripes. The case it comes with I don’t love. It works but feels cheep. This is almost always the case for me no mater how expensive the tool. I did purchase a separate case for the second tool I picked up that fits the accessory bits much better. That case is excellent and has allowed me to replace bits and add other small tools to use as a backup repair kit for my hunting rifle when I’m in the field. The teeth on the file could be finer for fish hooks. It is nice that the individual tools are all locking but I would prefer if they did not all come out in a big clump when you try and take one tool out. This is the way Leatherman is as well as many other multi tools. I really prefer the way Victorinox does it: each tool comes out individually with a nice solid click to let you know it is locked. These are small items to be picky about. I could not be happier with my purchase otherwise.
The scissors are sharp and work exceptionally well for a multi tool. The metal of screw drivers are hard enough they don’t round. The blade shape is a sheep’s foot instead of the clipped blade that most other multi tools use. I prefer this because for the mundane jobs of opening packages and spreading peanut butter it just works better and is more durable.
What really sold me was the quality of help and service that I received at the shop. They offered me a reasonable price on shipping and made sure I had spare blades for the pliers, an upgraded sheath and extra tools. They obviously took pride in the design and affordability.
Buy it! It is a great tool that does everything you need with a quality feel and it won’t break the bank.
